Facebook Acquires Wit.ai

Are voice recognition updates on the horizon for Facebook? It seems as though this is likely the direction Facebook is heading with the acquisition of Wit.ai.

Wit.ai is a startup founded just 18 months ago. Wit.ai is known for being a development rich company that has created hundreds of apps. Wit.ai currently employs a team of 6,000 developers.

It is expected that the acquisition of Wit.ai by Facebook is a move to develop voice-control interfaces including voice to text input for Facebook Messenger and updates. Speculation for Facebook’s use of the Wit.ai technology includes an updated app that is completely voice controlled.

Wit.ai’s technology is unique in that it allows users to add a few simple lines of code to enable speech recognition and voice control. According to a Wit.ai spokesman, “Facebook has the resources and talent to help us take the next step. Facebook’s mission is to connect everyone and build amazing experiences for the over 1.3 billion people on the platform – technology that understands natural language is a big part of that, and we think we can help.”

Now we wait and see what the next big thing from Facebook will be.
