LinkedIn was named the most popular social media tool by the nation’s fastest growing private companies in a recent study released by the University of Massachusetts at Dartmouth Center for Marketing Research. The study looked at social media usage by those companies listed on the 2012 Inc. 500 List.
Among those on the Inc. 500 List, 81% use LinkedIn compared with only 67% using Facebook. LinkedIn’s usage increased from 73% the previous year. Additionally, Facebook’s usage declined from 74% in 2011.
Other interesting findings from this social media usage study include:
- 44% of companies on the Inc. List are now blogging.
- 28% of companies are using Foursquare. This is double the amount using the service in 2011.
- YouTube usage is down from 45% in 2011 to 30% in 2012.
- Social media new comer Pinterest is used by 18% of companies on the list.
The Dartmouth study also found that CEOs are contributing content or taking ownership of some degree of social media for their companies. 63% of CEOs on this year’s list of fastest growing companies are actively engaged in social media. This could be contributing to the finding that 62% of companies on the list believe social media has been very necessary or somewhat necessary to the growth of their business.
